The experience

The minivan leaves Thessaloniki and reaches Litochoro, the village at Mount Olympus's base, in roughly an hour. From there the hiking path follows the Enipeas River through forest, crossing wooden bridges and climbing gently toward the waterfall and the cave of St. Dionisius. The trail is easy enough that families with children from age one can join, though the walk itself demands a moderate level of fitness, not a stroll, but nothing technical.

After a break at the cave, you retrace the path back to Litochoro for coffee before the drive back to Thessaloniki. On the return route, the tour stops at the archaeological site of Dion, where the remains of an ancient city sit at the mountain's edge. Entry to the museum there is separate. The whole day runs five hours from start to finish.
