The experience
The day starts at Pozar, where forty-eight individual thermal baths, six indoor pools and one large outdoor pool (12 by 25 meters) sit at the foot of Mount Kaimaktsalan. The water stays at 37 degrees Celsius year-round, fed by the Thermopotamos, the "hot river" in Greek, and flows through a gorge lined with plane and willow trees draped in ivy. The pools are built for soaking, not sightseeing: people come for the warmth itself, which the springs are known to ease rheumatism, skin conditions and respiratory problems. You can float in the outdoor pool surrounded by steep rock walls and wild vegetation, or move between the smaller baths and indoor facilities depending on how long you want to stay.
The second half of the day moves to Edessa, where the Edessaios river drops into twelve waterfalls across the town. Four of them are easily visible from the main walking paths through the gorge, and the whole area has been upgraded with facilities and a continuously open tourist office. The Open Air Water Museum sits nearby, an industrial museum built around the old watermills and factories that once used the river's power. The contrast between the two sites is deliberate: Pozar is about stillness and warmth in a narrow gorge, while Edessa is movement and descent through a wider landscape.
The tour runs eight hours total and includes private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided. Hotel pickup from Thessaloniki is included, and the vehicle size depends on your group: one van for one to four people, or a larger one for five to seven. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, or sit on an adult's lap with a specialized infant seat available if needed.
