Byzantine churches here date back to the 6th century, built into villages you reach on foot through olive groves.

A half-day hiking tour on Naxos that covers 8 km through the Tragea Valley, connecting five traditional villages and stopping at Byzantine churches, a folklore museum and a local distillery. The route follows ancient paths and dirt trails with 448 meters of ascent; a Trekking Hellas guide leads in English, and the hike ends with an optional meal at a traditional taverna in Halki. Pickup is included in some options; children from age 12 are welcome.

The Experience

The hike starts in Halki, a village built around neoclassical stone houses, and follows the ancient paths that once connected the inland settlements of Naxos. You'll walk through the Tragea Valley, where olive, fig and citrus groves break up the landscape and small Byzantine churches appear unexpectedly—some from the 6th century, others from later eras, each with its own architectural style and frescoes. The terrain mixes dirt trails, paved sections and rocky ground, climbing and descending 448 meters over the 8 km route.

Three stops anchor the day. Panagia Drosiani, one of the Balkans' oldest churches, sits at the heart of the walk. In Kaloxylos, you'll visit a folklore museum filled with objects from daily life in earlier centuries—textiles, tools, household items that show how people lived here before. At the end of the hike, a local distillery produces Kitron, Naxos' citrus-based liqueur, and you'll see how it's made. Snacks are provided along the way.

The hike takes 4.5 hours total. Your guide speaks English and carries first aid kits and liability insurance. You finish back in Halki, where you can either sit down for a traditional meal at one of the island's tavernas (included in some options) or have free time to walk around the village on your own.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if you want to walk the paths between villages rather than drive through them, and if seeing churches built into the landscape matters more than visiting a single famous site. The fixed 4.5-hour schedule and included guide mean you're not navigating alone or deciding where to stop.
