The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Argostoli and a drive north to Myrtos Beach, 30 kilometers away in the municipality of Pilares. You get free time at the beach to swim in the blue waters and rest on the white pebbles. The beach is organized with a canteen, umbrellas, sun beds and a lifeguard on duty. Myrtos has held the Blue Flag award and been voted the best beach in Greece by thalassa more than any other, a distinction that shows in the clarity of the water and the way the surrounding cliffs frame the cove.
After Myrtos, the route takes you to Melissani Lake near Karavomilos. The lake sits inside a cave system 3.5 kilometers long, 40 meters wide and 36 meters high, created over millennia as water dissolved the limestone. You reach the lake by walking through an underground tunnel, then board a boat with a guide who takes you across the water to see the stalactites and the cave's crystal blue-green color. The cave was a place of worship in antiquity, dedicated to Pan and the nymph Melissani. Archaeologists found clay figures and relief plates here, now held in the Argostoli Archaeological Museum. A big section of the cave roof collapsed long ago, which is what opens the space to light and makes the underground lake visible at all.
Your private air-conditioned vehicle and driver are included for the full day, with hotel pickup and drop-off from Argostoli. Entrance fees to Melissani Lake are separate from the tour price.
