The site itself is compact but layered — you'll walk past the famous Lion Gate with its monumental relief, then through the palace grounds where you can see how the Mycenaeans lived and defended themselves during the Late Bronze Age. The Treasury of Atreus, the beehive tomb that's the most photographed structure here, does require a timed entry slot (you choose the time when you book), but everything else on the acropolis is open for you to explore whenever you arrive on your selected date. It's the kind of place where you can spend two hours or four, depending on whether you're reading every placard or just taking in the scale of the walls and the view down the valley.

After the site, the Museum of Mycenae sits nearby and holds the smaller, intimate pieces — pottery, weapons, jewelry, clay tablets — that show you what daily life actually looked like for the people who lived behind those walls. The collection includes artifacts from the Royal Tombs and everyday objects that reveal beliefs about death and the afterlife, which adds a human layer to the monumental ruins you've just walked through.
