The Experience

Your driver meets you outside the port office in Katakolo with a sign bearing your name, then drives you to Ancient Olympia in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The ride gives you a first look at the landscape before you step into the ruins themselves—the temple of Zeus once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, and the Olympic Flame is ignited here every four years for the modern Games. You walk the archaeological site at your own pace, then move through the museum to see the artifacts that came out of the ground.

After the site, your driver takes you through the modern town of Olympia, where you can browse local shops, grab a Greek coffee or a snack if you want. Then comes the optional stops: a family winery where you tour the vineyards, learn about the grape varieties and how they're grown, walk through the production area, and taste four wines paired with a snack; or a honey farm run by Mrs. Roula, who makes traditional diples (a honey dessert) in front of you and walks you through how the bees produce royal jelly, wax and venom. The farm sits off the main road, filled with fruit trees and vegetables, and you sample spoon sweets and jams made from the harvest. You choose which stops suit your day, and your driver adjusts the route to fit.

The whole outing runs about five hours from port to port. Your driver stays with the vehicle and knows the area well enough to answer questions and help you move through the day without arranging anything yourself. Bottled water is in the car. The return to Katakolo is timed so you're back before your ship leaves.
