The experience

The tour starts with an off-road push into the Cretan mountains toward Milatos Cave, where you hike a soft trail through wild landscape surrounded by rugged cliffs. The cave sits above a coastal view you can take in from a café if you'd rather skip the hike. From there, the Jeep climbs through Xera Xyla, a mountain region where you can collect aromatic wild herbs as you move through the fresh air and scrub forest.

The route then drops into Fourni, a traditional village where stone houses line narrow alleys and time moves at village pace. A local café offers coffee and the chance to sit with the atmosphere. Next is Plaka, a fishing village on the coast where you photograph Spinalonga Island against red rocks and clear water. Elounda follows, where you walk among the submerged ruins of the ancient Sunken City of Olous, now visible beneath the surface. The tour ends in Agios Nikolaos, a coastal city built around Voulismeni Lake, where you can walk the waterfront or settle into a café.

A Land Rover Defender or 4x4 Mercedes Vito carries the group, with an experienced driver who speaks English, French, German, Arabic or one of several other languages. Hotel pickup and return are included, along with fuel. The full loop takes six hours.
