The experience

“You’re the captain now,” Nikos grinned, handing me the keys at the little dock just outside Corfu City. I’d never driven a boat before (unless you count that pedal boat in Lake Como), but he ran through everything with this patient mix of Greek calm and dad-joke energy. The engine rumbled under my hand, surprisingly gentle, and suddenly we were off, hugging the east coastline of Corfu with nothing but sun and that salty breeze. My cousin tried to play DJ but gave up after two songs because honestly, it was better just listening to the water slap against the hull and the distant laughter from other boats.

About an hour in, we drifted near a cove where the water was so clear you could count pebbles on the bottom. I still remember how cold it felt jumping in: like every nerve woke up at once. We passed around homemade spanakopita (don’t ask how squashed it got) and took turns with the snorkeling gear they’d left onboard. There were these tiny blue fish everywhere, darting around our toes.
