The Experience

I almost missed the boat—literally. You know that scramble when you see the masts bobbing in Chania’s Old Venetian Harbor and realize you’re two minutes late? The first stop was Agioi Theodoroi island. I’d heard about the wild Cretan goats (Kri-Kri), but seeing one perched on a rock like it owned the place was something else. The water was cool but not cold—just enough to wake you up when you jump in. Someone passed around tiny cheese pies and olives; honestly, I think they tasted better just because we were floating there.

Mahirida Beach was next. It’s quieter than I expected—no crowds, just pale sand and turquoise water that looks fake until you dip your toes in. Lunch was cooked right on board; grilled fish with lemon and some salad that tasted like summer itself. There were laughs when someone tried to say “Maherida” properly (I didn’t even attempt it after hearing Li’s version). Snorkeling gear was offered, but I mostly floated and watched sunlight flicker underwater. On the way back to Chania, everyone got a bit sleepy—the kind of tired that feels earned.

I still think about that view of Chania as we sailed back in late afternoon light—the city glowing gold behind us. It wasn’t perfect (my towel blew away at one point), but maybe that’s why it sticks with me.
