“You’re sure you’ve never driven a boat before?” Antonis grinned at us, handing over the keys like he was giving away his car. I half-laughed, half-panicked — but he walked us through everything so calmly, even when I fumbled with the throttle. The morning air smelled salty and a little sharp, and the sun was already bouncing off Souda Bay. He showed us on the map where we might find quieter coves (he circled one spot twice — not sure if that was a hint), then told us to call if we got lost. I liked that part. Felt like someone had our backs.

I didn’t expect steering to feel so… floaty? It’s nothing like driving a car. My partner almost dropped his phone overboard trying to get a picture of Akrotiri cliffs — still makes me laugh thinking about his face. We anchored off this tiny beach nobody else seemed to know about; water clear enough to see every pebble below. Jumping in was cold at first but worth it. Snorkeling gear came with the boat, so we spent ages just floating around spotting fish (I’m convinced I saw an octopus but maybe it was just seaweed). There’s something about eating soggy sandwiches from the cooler with your feet dangling in the water that just… sticks with you.

The Bluetooth speakers worked better than expected — we played music until some local fishermen waved as they passed by, probably judging our playlist. We lost track of time completely; four hours went fast, but you can do a full day if you want (next time I think we will). Coming back in felt weirdly bittersweet — like you want to keep going further along Crete’s coast but also kind of relieved you didn’t crash into anything. Antonis met us at the dock again and asked if we found “his” beach. Not telling which one it was though.
