Chania cruise excursion: Olive oil mill & monastery wine tasting
Monks at Dourakis Winery make their own wine using solar energy and organic farming.
A private tour from Chania's Port of Souda combines visits to Kanakis Olive Mill in Vryses and Dourakis Winery in Alikampos, with tastings of extra virgin olive oil and Cretan wine, plus Cretan snacks and time wandering Chania's Venetian Old Town. An English-speaking driver provides transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the itinerary fits within a cruise port call.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Chania and local specialties
- Visit Kanakis Olive Mill
- Tour Dourakis Winery
- Wander Chania Old Town
The experience
The tour starts at Port of Souda with private pickup and takes you inland to Vryses, where Kanakis Olive Mill has been a family operation since 1965. You'll tour the mill itself and taste extra virgin olive oil produced there, then move on to Dourakis Winery in the village of Alikampos. The winery, founded in 1988, operates on solar energy and uses organic farming methods: a model of sustainable winemaking in Crete. You'll sample the wine varieties the monks produce, paired with Cretan snacks: local cheese, tomato, cucumber, olives, smoked ham, and bread with olive oil, oregano, lemon and salt.
After the tastings, the tour brings you to Chania's Old Town, where the Venetian Harbour and narrow streets have survived almost unchanged since the medieval period. The lighthouse at the harbour entrance and the preserved mansions, fountains and churches throughout the maze-like alleys are the draw here. You have time to wander and take in the monuments at your own pace. The whole route is timed to fit a cruise port call, and your driver speaks English and provides bottled water throughout the day.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you're traveling as a couple or small family and want a private vehicle and driver for the day. The fixed route through the mill and winery gives structure to a port call, and the time in Chania's Old Town is unguided, so you move at your own pace.
