Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Intro and scuba diving experience

  • Attend theory lesson at dive center
  • Practice scuba skills in shallow water
  • Enjoy 30-40 minute dive at 5-6 meters

“Don’t worry, we’ll go slow — just breathe and look around,” said Kostas as he handed me the mask. He’d already cracked a joke about his wetsuit being tighter after too many souvlaki nights, which made everyone relax (me especially). The dive center in Nea Makri felt casual but organized — you could smell neoprene and salty air, and there was this low hum of Greek radio from the back room. I kept glancing at the sea through the window, half excited, half nervous.

We started with a little theory session — nothing too heavy, mostly about how not to panic if your mask fills up or you forget how to breathe (which sounds funny now). There were just four of us plus Kostas. He showed us how to check our gear and let us fiddle with everything before we even got near the water. I liked that he didn’t rush; he waited while I struggled with my fins (they really do feel weird at first), and didn’t make it awkward when I asked him to repeat something.

The shallow water practice was honestly my favorite part. At first, everything felt loud — my own breathing echoing inside the regulator, tiny pops from distant swimmers. The water was cooler than I expected but clear enough to see pebbles and a few curious fish darting around my feet. Once we went deeper (not far, maybe 5 or 6 meters), it got quiet in a way that’s hard to describe — like being wrapped up in blue light. Kostas pointed out some spiky sea urchins on a rock and gave me a thumbs-up; I probably grinned so wide my mask leaked a bit.

Afterwards we sat on the beach with juice and swapped stories about who panicked most (I think I won). Someone’s little brother tried to say “octopus” in Greek and Kostas nearly spit out his tea laughing. It wasn’t fancy or dramatic — just easygoing people sharing something new by the Aegean. I still think about that strange silence underwater sometimes, like you’re visiting another planet for an hour.
