The Experience
I didn’t expect my first real view of the Acropolis to be from the sidecar of a motorcycle, but that’s how it happened. We’d just zipped out of the mess near Monastiraki Square—horns, market smells, people everywhere—when our guide Yannis grinned and pointed up. The sun was hitting those old stones in a way I can’t really describe, and suddenly the whole city felt smaller. The wind whipped at my hair under the helmet (which smelled faintly like lemon cleaner), and I realized I was grinning too.
The best part? We slid through tiny streets in Plaka and Anafiotika that cars just can’t reach. At one point, an old woman waved from her blue balcony—she shouted something that made Yannis laugh, but I only caught “kali mera.” There were bursts of bougainvillea over whitewashed walls, and for a second it felt more like an island than Athens. He told us about the craftsmen from Anafi who built these houses ages ago—his pride was obvious, and honestly it made me see the place differently.
We stopped near Herakleidon Museum for a quick break (I needed it; those cobblestones are no joke in a sidecar). Yannis offered us cold water from his backpack and pointed out where he used to get koulouri as a kid. I tried saying “koulouri” in Greek—he laughed, probably because I butchered it—and then we rumbled off again toward Thiseio. The whole private guided tour of Athens by sidecar felt like skipping lines and crowds without even trying. Even now, when I hear motorbikes back home, I think about that view over Plaka’s rooftops.
