The experience

A licensed guide leads you through the monuments on foot, starting at the Propylaea, the grand marble gateway designed by Mnesikles. The earsets mean you hear the guide's commentary clearly even in crowds, and the route moves through the Erechtheion with its distinctive Caryatid Porch (six maiden statues that support the structure) before reaching the Parthenon itself. The tour also takes in the Theatre of Dionysus, where the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides first played to Athenian crowds, and the Temple of Athena Nike, perched on the southwestern edge of the Acropolis with views across the city.

The walk ends on top of the Acropolis, which means you have time to take more pictures or simply stand there without being rushed. Philopappos Hill and the Odeum of Herodes Atticus (a stone theater built in 161 AD that still hosts performances) are also part of the route. The whole tour runs about 2 hours. If you choose the option with entry included, you skip the ticket lines at the Acropolis and Museum. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The Acropolis is exposed and there's no shade.
