The experience

Nzulezu sits on Tadane Lake in western Ghana, built entirely on wooden stilts with piers connecting the homes, school, church and community centers instead of streets. You leave Takoradi by SUV with your guide and driver, traveling through countryside to reach the lake. Once there, you board a boat to cross the water to the village itself, then walk the wooden piers to see how the community lives and works on the water.

The tour includes a canoe fishing lesson, where you learn the technique locals use to catch fish from the lake. You'll have time to interact with residents and explore the village at a relaxed pace. Meals come from crops grown in the area: fresh, organic food prepared as part of the day. You also get bottled water, fresh coconuts and local pastries like plantain chips, both sweet and savory versions.

The return journey to Takoradi gives you time to pick up souvenirs and keepsakes from the village before heading back. The whole experience runs about six hours from pickup to drop-off, with the guide handling all the logistics and the air-conditioned vehicle keeping you comfortable during the drive.

What is Nzulezu actually like when you get there?

Nzulezu is a working village where families live, children attend school and the community gathers in churches and centers: all built on wooden stilts over the water. The piers connecting the structures replace streets, and daily life happens on the water and the platforms above it.

Do I learn to fish myself or watch someone else do it?

You learn canoe fishing from your guide during the tour, so you're doing it rather than watching. It's a hands-on lesson in the technique locals use.

What's included in the meals and drinks?

Meals are prepared from fresh, locally grown crops. The package also includes bottled water, fresh coconuts and local pastries: plantain chips in both sweet and savory versions.

How does the pickup work from my hotel?

Your guide and driver collect you from your Takoradi hotel in an air-conditioned SUV, then drive you to Tadane Lake for the boat ride to the village. They return you to your hotel at the end of the day.
