The experience

You leave Munich in an air-conditioned coach for a two-hour drive to Lake Eibsee, where your guide provides live commentary on the route. The cable car from there takes you straight up to the summit in ten minutes: no hiking required to reach the top. Once at the viewing platform, you have an hour to take in the panorama of more than 400 peaks stretching across the Alps.

From there, a walking path leads to the golden summit cross, a 45- to 60-minute round trip on foot. By around 2pm you descend by cable car to the Zugspitzplatt, the glacier plateau, where the day opens up. You can sit down to lunch at one of the mountain restaurants, which serve vegetarian and halal options alongside standard fare, or head straight to the toboggan run if the summer season is underway: toboggans are free to borrow. The pace here is entirely yours. There's no set itinerary for this stretch.

At 4pm you gather at the station to board the cogwheel train for the descent, a historic ride that takes a different route down the mountain than the cable car took up. The bus departs for Munich at 4:45pm, arriving back around 6:45pm. The cable car tickets, cogwheel train ride and guide are all included. Food, drinks and toboggan time are on your own.
