The experience
The coach leaves Frankfurt and climbs into the Spessart before dropping into Würzburg, the old university town on the River Main. Weikersheim comes next, where you enter the Renaissance castle to see the Knight's Hall and Mirror cabinet, then walk the Baroque court garden. Small wine villages dot the Tauber valley on the approach to Rothenburg, the medieval walled town that anchors the day.
Rothenburg's old town sits completely intact inside two kilometres of walkable walls. You move through the market square toward the Plönlein, past the churches, and can climb the tower walkway for views across the valley. The Crime Museum and the stork that nests on the Markustor roof are there if you want them. On the return to Frankfurt, the coach stops at the Würzburg Residence, the baroque prince bishops' palace built between 1740 and 1744 to plans by Balthasar Neumann. The gardens and church are free to enter.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English or German throughout the route. The tour runs 10.5 hours door to door.
