The experience
The boat leaves Bonn and immediately passes the Headquarters of the Federal President and the former plenary hall of the Bundestag: both visible from the water. As you move downriver, the landscape shifts from city to mountain: the Siebengebirge rises on the right bank with the Drachenfels visible above, and Petersberg sits on the opposite side with its hilltop hotel. The route is built around what you see from the deck, not what you walk to, so the pace is set by the river and the commentary you choose to follow.
The audio guide comes in English, French or German, so you control what you hear about each sight as it passes. Bad Honnef brings the island of Grafenwerth into view, then the route continues past Unkel and toward Remagen, where the remains of the bridge destroyed in World War II stand on both sides of the Rhine. The Peace Museum bridge is the landmark that marks the turning point of the journey. Linz is the terminus. The boat turns around there and heads back to Bonn, retracing the route on the return leg.
The cabin is air-conditioned, and the boat is wheelchair accessible. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are allowed on board. The journey takes four hours total, so it is a full morning or afternoon commitment, but there is no walking required beyond boarding and disembarking.
