The experience

You start at Babelsberg Castle, the summer palace of King Wilhelm I, perched on a hill above the Havel River with its grounds spreading below. Then you cross the Glienicke Bridge (the actual bridge where Soviet and American agents were exchanged during the Cold War), and from there the route opens onto the park system that holds the rest of the day.

Sanssouci Palace is the centerpiece, Frederick the Great's Rococo palace and Potsdam's main draw. The tour includes the exterior, the Ruinenberg, Frederick's grave, and the castle terrace with views across the grounds. If you want to go inside the palace itself, you can arrange that during the stop (entrance fee separate), and your guide will walk you through the rooms. From there you move into Sanssouci Park on foot, seeing the fountains and the sight lines between the different castles. The New Palace comes next (the enormous palace Frederick built later, now a museum) followed by the smaller palaces that fill out the park: the Italian Renaissance-style building with its greenhouse rooms, and the former guest quarters attached to Sanssouci. Cecilienhof, the English Tudor-style summer palace where Stalin, Churchill and Truman met in 1945 to decide Germany's future, is the last major stop.

Between the palaces, the tour includes the Dutch Quarter, the picturesque 18th-century neighborhood where Dutch craftsmen built houses in their own style (now lined with shops and cafés), and the Russian settlement of wooden houses from the early 19th century.
