The experience
You start at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum on Kartäusergasse, download the Explorial app to your phone, enter a 6-digit game code you receive by text, and head into the walled old town. The app feeds you riddles and trivia challenges that point you toward each landmark, with photo tasks that unlock the next clue. You walk at whatever pace suits your group, take breaks whenever you want, and there's no guide waiting or schedule to keep.
The route opens at the Ehekarussell, a fountain carved with six bronze scenes of marriage from first kiss to final reckoning, based on a 16th-century poem. Next comes the Dürer-Hase, a hefty bronze hare crouched near Albrecht Dürer's house below the castle: an unsettling homage to the artist's famous watercolour. The Schöner Brunnen sits on the Hauptmarkt, forty figures high and glittering, with a brass ring you can spin for luck if you find it. The app keeps you oriented on a live map with marked locations, so you always know where you are inside the old town walls.
The leaderboard tracks points as your group solves puzzles, and you can compete against the city's high score. All the landmarks sit in public areas: no entrance fees required, no tickets to buy. You need a fully charged smartphone with active mobile data and no VPN running. The app won't work on city Wi-Fi. If bad weather or illness stops you before you start, you can reschedule for another day, switch to a different city, or request a refund.
