You walk through a tunnel to the original lift — the one that goes straight up inside the mountain — and then you're at the Eagle's Nest, which is now a restaurant. On a clear day the view is the thing people come for: you can see across the Berchtesgaden valley and into the neighboring peaks. If the weather turns (fog, ice, snow can close the summit), the tour pivots to a longer visit at the Obersalzberg Documentation Center instead, which covers the Nazi-era history of the site and includes access to the bunker complexes. After the shuttle brings you back down, there's free time to grab lunch at the Berggasthof Obersalzberg — a historic restaurant in what used to be the "General Walker" hotel — or head straight to the documentation center if you haven't been yet. Then the bus takes you into the town of Berchtesgaden itself, where your guide leads a 20- to 30-minute walking tour pointing out the main sights and the town's history. You get another 30 minutes on your own to wander or grab coffee, and then everyone meets back at the bus around 5:15pm for the drive home. The return route follows the German alpine road, which means more valley views on the way back to Munich.

One thing to know: bring cash. The fee to ride the special bus up to Eagle's Nest doesn't take cards, only cash. And you'll need your passport — it's right on the border. Show up at the meeting point by 8:15am so the bus can leave on time at 8:30am.
