The experience
You meet your guide on the street opposite the tram stop near Metzgerwirt, then walk through the landscaped front garden toward the palace entrance. The palace grounds are wider across the front than Versailles, and your guide points out the scale and detail as you approach. Skip-the-line tickets mean you walk past the queue at the ticket office and straight into the rooms.
Inside, the guide leads you through Baroque interiors decorated with frescoes, old paintings, ornate tapestry and antique furniture. You see the Max Emanuel Gallery of Beauties, the Coat of Arms Chamber, the Queen's Apartment and the Palace Chapel, and hear stories about the court life of the House of Wittelsbach, who built this as their summer residence. The Carriage Museum (Marstallmuseum) comes next, housing one of the world's largest collections of representative coaches and sleighs, including the original Coronation Coach of Emperor Karl VII. The guide explains princely coach building and the equestrian culture of the royals. In summer, the palace park opens to you after the tour ends and you can explore it freely. In winter it is closed.
