The experience

The app marks your location on a map and feeds you challenges at each stop: decode the Kaiserbrunnen, a fountain crowded with satirical bronzes mocking four emperors and a smug peacock; find the Haus zum Hohen Hafen, the patrician house remembered as the 'cradle of Prussia' for a noble birth that changed history; stand on Münsterplatz where the Council of Constance once ended a papal schism. Trivia and photo tasks punctuate the route, and a leaderboard tracks your group's score against the city's high score.

The walking is light and the stops are all in public areas, so no entrance fees apply. You move at your own rhythm: pause for coffee, linger at a landmark, skip ahead if the riddle bores you. The app works in 24 languages including English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. Choose yours when you launch the game. A fully charged smartphone with active mobile data is required, and the operator recommends disabling any VPN before you start, as it can cause the app to disconnect.

If bad weather or illness forces a reschedule, you can move the tour to another day or switch to a different city without penalty. Service animals are welcome, and the route suits all fitness levels.
