The experience

The Electoral Palace, the last great residence of Trier's prince-electors, is where you begin. Open the Ciceru experience on your phone, and the walking route unfolds from there. You navigate on foot using in-app directions, stopping when you want and picking the route back up whenever you're ready. No download, no connection required once you've loaded the tour. Just your smartphone and the map of all eight stops.

The stops themselves are the story. You pass the 158-metre Prussian Government Building, a Wilhelmine fortress of volcanic tuff built 1902–1906 on the Rhine waterfront. The Schängelbrunnen, a bronze spitting-boy fountain in the Town Hall courtyard, sits among the Four Towers: four Baroque corner houses rebuilt after French bombardment in 1689–1692. The Florinsmarkt holds the Romanesque church and its famous Augenroller clock, whose eyes roll with the pendulum. At the Basilica of St. Castor, where Charlemagne's grandsons carved up the Carolingian Empire in 842, you stand at a hinge of European history. The walk ends at the Deutsches Eck, the headland where the two rivers collide, crowned by the equestrian monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I.

Audio stories at each location set the scene. Quizzes turn the walk into a game. The tour is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and three additional languages. About 2 km on foot, roughly 90 minutes total, but the pace is entirely yours.
