Follow riddles through Heidelberg's three most storied landmarks at your own speed

A self-guided walking tour of Heidelberg using an app-based scavenger hunt with riddles, trivia and photo tasks to navigate between landmarks. You start whenever you want from Bismarckplatz, solve puzzles to reach Haus zum Riesen, Universitätsplatz and the Alte Brücke, and move through the old town at your own pace over around 2 hours. No guide joins you. The app saves your progress if you stop to explore.

The experience

Download the Explorial app, enter your 6-digit game code, and the riddles start guiding you through one of Germany's most painted cities. Your phone becomes the map and the puzzle book at once: each solved riddle marks your next landmark and unlocks a story about the place you're standing in. The walk stays largely flat through the old town, so you can pause whenever something catches your eye without losing your place in the game.

The route threads through three chapters of Heidelberg's long history. Haus zum Riesen, a 16th-century Renaissance mansion on the Hauptstrasse, opens with its carved doorway and layered facade: one of the finest buildings on the street that made the old town famous. From there the app takes you to Universitätsplatz, the square at the heart of one of Germany's oldest universities, where student life and city life have overlapped for over 600 years. The route ends at the Alte Brücke, the Old Bridge across the Neckar, where you get the classic view of the castle above and the town below that has drawn painters for centuries.

You compete against your group's score and the city's high score as you move through the game. The app tracks points for solved riddles, trivia answers and photo tasks. Available in 24 languages, so you can start in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German or another tongue when you open the app. Groups up to 15 can book together, and the game works for couples, families and any size group. Everyone solves the same riddles but plays their own game.
