The experience

Two hours, one guide, up to 25 people per group. This is a walking tour built around the sites that define Hannover's character. You start in front of the Market Church, a 14th-century brick gothic landmark that was partially destroyed in 1943 and restored afterward. From there the route moves through winding alleys of the Old Town, stopping at the Old Town Hall (built over a century with Romanesque and Neo-Gothic influences), the Ballhof Building (once a sports hall, later a theatre), and Kreuz-Church, the oldest church in the city, reconstructed after the war like much of what surrounds it.

The walk includes two sites with stories attached. At the Oskar-Winter Fountain, local legend says turning the small brass ring embedded in the ironwork makes a wish come true. Nearby stands the Leibniz House, where the mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz lived from 1646 to 1716. The Aegidien Church, destroyed in World War II and left unrepaired as a memorial, holds the Peace Bell inside its ruins: a gift from Hiroshima, rung annually on August 6th at 08:15 by a delegation from the city.

The tour ends at the New Town Hall, opened by Emperor Wilhelm II at a cost of ten million marks: all paid in cash. The curved lift inside the green dome is the only one of its kind in Europe, and climbing it takes you 98 meters up for a view across the city and, on clear days, toward the Harz Mountain range. No separate transport is needed. The route is walkable and suitable for all fitness levels.

What is the Kreuz-Church and why is it significant?

Kreuz-Church is the oldest church in Hannover, dating from 1333. It was mostly destroyed during World War II and was reconstructed after the war, making it one of several landmarks on the tour that had to be rebuilt.

Can I ride the lift inside the New Town Hall dome?

Yes. The curved lift inside the green dome takes you 98 meters to the top, and it is the only lift of its kind in Europe. From there you get a view across the city and, if the weather is clear, toward the Harz Mountain range.

What is the Peace Bell and where is it?

The Peace Bell is inside the ruins of the Aegidien Church, a gift from the city of Hiroshima. It is rung annually on August 6th at 08:15 by a delegation from Hiroshima, in memory of those who died in the air strike.

How long does the tour take and how many people can join?

The tour runs for two hours. Up to 25 people can join per guide, and the guide stays with your group only: no larger mixed groups.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to get to the starting point?
