“You see that tower?” our guide Jonas grinned, pointing up at the Rathaus. “That’s where we argue about everything—sometimes for hours.” I laughed because, honestly, the square was already buzzing at 10am with people arguing over pastries and bus schedules. We started our Hamburg highlights walking tour right there, under gray clouds that felt kind of right for this city. The stone under my shoes was still damp from last night’s rain—Hamburg always smells a bit like river water and coffee in the morning.

I didn’t expect to feel so much history just by walking. Jonas led us through Deichstrasse, which looked almost too perfect with its crooked houses and faded signs. He told us about the fire that nearly wiped out half the city (I’d never heard that story before), and then suddenly we were standing in front of St. Nikolai Memorial—a burnt-out church spire reaching into the sky. It was quiet there; even the wind seemed to hush for a second. I still think about that silence.

The best part? Wandering into Speicherstadt—the Warehouse District—where red-brick buildings lean over green canals. There was this sharp smell of spices drifting from an open window (Jonas said it was cardamom). We watched a barge slide past as he explained how these warehouses once held tea and carpets from all over the world. And then, out of nowhere, you catch sight of the Elbphilharmonie’s glass waves above the rooftops—like something from another planet landed here by accident.
