The Experience
I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel like a kid again in the middle of Hamburg’s HafenCity, but there we were — standing by the water, clutching a backpack stuffed with odd little gadgets and a book that looked like it belonged to some secret society. Our guide handed everything over with this half-grin, said something about “the Captain waiting,” and then just left us to it. I could smell coffee from the nearby café mixing with the river air — not sure why that stuck with me.
The first clue was trickier than I thought (and yes, my partner is still bragging about solving it before me). We wandered past these glassy new buildings and old brick warehouses, arguing over which bridge was “the right one.” At one point we asked a local for directions — she laughed and told us we were “warm,” whatever that meant. The puzzles had us looking up at weird statues, counting windows, even listening for a certain bell. It’s funny how you start noticing things you’d normally walk straight past. The main keyword here really is treasure hunt — but it’s more about noticing what’s around you than finding gold or anything.
If you do this on a Tuesday or Thursday (like we did), you’re on your own — no guide trailing behind, just WhatsApp instructions and your crew. That felt strange at first but also kind of freeing. There was this moment near the harbor where everything went quiet except for the distant clang of ship masts — I remember thinking how rare it is to just play outside as an adult. We finished sweaty and slightly lost but grinning anyway. Not sure I’ll ever look at HafenCity quite the same way again.
