Summary

Walk Freiburg’s old streets, see medieval gates and the Whale House

You’ll walk Freiburg’s winding streets with an English-speaking guide who knows every corner—see the Whale House, stand beneath medieval gates, step inside the ancient cathedral, and catch small moments of daily life along the way. Expect stories you won’t find in guidebooks—and maybe even a laugh or two if you try your German out loud.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We met our guide right at the Siegesdenkmal — that Victory Monument is bigger than I expected, honestly. There were a few locals chatting nearby, one guy with a pretzel in hand (the smell made me hungry). Our guide, Anna, started off with this story about how 18 sculptors competed to design it. I liked that she didn’t rush us; we just stood there for a bit, letting the city noise sink in — trams clanging somewhere behind us, pigeons flapping up from the cobbles.

Walking through Freiburg’s old town felt like flipping through some very worn-out history book. The Haus zum Walfisch — or Whale House — looked almost out of place among all those smaller buildings. Anna mentioned it was used for filming Suspiria, which got a laugh out of someone in our group who loves horror movies. I tried to imagine what it must’ve been like here centuries ago, but then a group of students zipped by on bikes and brought me back to now. The air smelled faintly of roasted chestnuts from a street vendor near Bertold's Fountain (I had to stop myself from buying some).

The cathedral really caught me off guard. It’s massive but not showy — dark stone, bits chipped away here and there. Anna pointed out details I’d have missed: carvings above the door, two altars by artists whose names I promptly forgot (sorry Hans Baldung and Holbein). Inside was cool and quiet; you could hear your own footsteps echoing. I’m not religious but there was something about standing in a place that took three centuries to finish… makes you feel small in a good way.

We passed under Martinstor and Schwabentor — those old gates are battered but still standing. Someone asked if the city ever closes them at night (they don’t). By the time we reached Saint Martin’s Church, my feet were tired but I didn’t mind. The sun came out for maybe five minutes and lit up the red rooftops across Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
