The experience
You meet your guide at St. Paul's Church on Paulsplatz and walk through Frankfurt's most recognizable landmarks. Römerberg is the historic square where the city's kings and emperors were crowned since 1253, and your guide explains the Fountain of Justice and the half-timbered buildings that frame it. You'll see inside Frankfurt Cathedral, a 328-foot tower with an interior of altars and carved details. Some parts (the museum and tower climb) cost extra and are optional. The Iron Bridge, Alte Oper with its 19th-century architecture, and Eschenheimer Turm, a late-medieval gate tower, round out the walking portion.
The 4 and 6-hour options include a visit to Goethe House, the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. You walk through the rooms floor by floor, seeing furniture and paintings in authentic 18th-century bourgeois style and learning about the household Goethe shared with his sister Cornelia. On the 6-hour tour, you board a boat on the Main River and cruise past the embankments, the European Central Bank, the Museums District, and the historic Gerbermühle before the boat turns back. The guide stays with you throughout and tailors the pace and focus to what interests your group.
Hotel pickup is included if you stay in Frankfurt's Old Town. The guide will collect you before the tour starts. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages, chosen when you book. The tour includes tips about local restaurants, patisseries and pubs. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and note that the Frankfurt Cathedral tower involves many stairs if you choose to climb it.
