Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Berlin Wall history and memorials
- Visit ghost stations exhibition
- Explore permanent Berlin Wall exhibition
- See Window of Remembrance memorial
The experience
The tour moves through three distinct sites that piece together how Berlin lived divided. You start at an exhibition on the ghost stations (the subway stops sealed off between East and West from 1961 to 1989), and see how the GDR monitored the border from below. Then you walk into the permanent exhibition in the former border strip itself, where original remains sit alongside replicas of demolished houses, the Church of Reconciliation and escape tunnels. Archaeological windows cut into the ground reveal earlier border installations and hidden traces of the city layered beneath.
Your guide, a Berlin resident, anchors the walk in the stories that shaped the wall: escape attempts, the people who died trying, the families split across the barrier, and the moments that changed everything. The route ends at the Window of Remembrance, a rust-red steel memorial with individual windows, names, dates and photographs of victims. It's part of every guided tour here, and it's where the abstract history becomes personal.
You choose between an English-language or German-language guide at checkout. The walk is compact, an hour total, and all areas are wheelchair accessible. Strollers work for infants and small children. Public transportation stops are nearby if you need to reach the starting point.
