The experience
The tour starts in front of Bamberg Cathedral, also called the imperial cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. Inside you'll see the marble tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and his wife, Empress Kunigunde, and the tomb of Pope Clement II: the only papal grave in Germany. The Bamberg Horseman, a 13th-century equestrian statue, stands here too, and its rider's identity remains debated. Some say it depicts the Hungarian king Stephen I. From there the guide leads you through the Old Court, a German Renaissance building finished in the 16th century that now houses the Museum of History and St. Katherine's Chapel, used for weddings.
The walk continues to the New Residence, where the prince-bishop lived in lavish style. You'll see the Imperial Hall, the elector's room and the bishop's apartments, then step into the Rose Garden in the inner court for a view over Bamberg. After a short stroll through the Old Town, you reach the Church of Our Lady, the only Gothic church in Bamberg, built at the end of the late Gothic period. The final stop is the Old Town Hall on an artificial island in the Regnitz river: locals created it by throwing stakes and logs into the water after the bishop refused to give them land to build on.
The route is easy walking with no steep climbs, and the guide will adjust the pace and stops to suit your group. Hotel pickup is included if your accommodation is central to the city. You can ask the guide to customize details as you walk, so the tour adapts to what interests you most.
