The experience
You leave Frankfurt by coach in the morning and head south into the Black Forest, stopping first in Baden-Baden to walk the old-world avenues and see the 2,000-year-old spa house and casino set among landscaped parks. The town's reputation as a destination for international visitors goes back centuries, built on those thermal springs. From there the route climbs into the dark woods landscape toward Lake Mummelsee, a glacial relic where you have free time to walk the shoreline, browse the cuckoo clocks sold here, or simply sit by the water before the group moves on.
After crossing the Rhine into France, you enter Strasbourg on a Petit Train that winds through the old town center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before the group disembarks for an indoor visit of the Gothic cathedral, one of the highlights of the day. You then have the late afternoon to wander La Petite France, the half-timbered quarter that gives the district its name, or explore the city on your own. The return journey to Frankfurt begins in the late afternoon.
The coach is equipped for the full loop, and your guide handles the route and the stops. You simply show up with your passport. The day moves at a steady pace with built-in moments to stand still (the lake, the cathedral, the city streets), so it works for travelers who want structure without being rushed.
