The experience
The tour starts at the Fuggerei, the oldest social settlement in world history, founded by one of Europe's richest families and still home to 150 people today. From there you walk into the old city, passing the birthplace of Berthold Brecht and the sites that shaped Augsburg's 16th and 17th century golden age: the period when the city became a center of trade, banking and religious upheaval.
You'll see the work of Elias Holl, the architect who defined Augsburg's skyline: the Butcher's Guild, the Town Hall (the first building in the world to have six floors, built to host the Imperial diet), the Weaver's Guild with its painted exterior walls, and the Zeughaus, the armory converted into a cultural space after World War II. The route includes St. Peter am Perlach Church, where a unique painting of Mary Untie of Knots draws pilgrims from across Europe, and the Damenhof and Fuggerhaus, where Martin Luther was interrogated by the Pope's envoy about his beliefs. The tour ends at the Schaezler Palais, whose ballroom is the best preserved in Germany and survived the Second World War untouched.
Your guide speaks English or German and walks only with your group: no larger tour crowd. If you're staying centrally in Augsburg, hotel pickup is included at no extra charge, and the walk itself requires no transportation beyond your own feet. The route is wheelchair accessible, all surfaces are level, and the pace suits any age and fitness level.
