The drive passes the Zhinvali Dam, Ananuri fortress, and Pasanauri village before reaching the resort at elevation.

Step-by-step itinerary

Day trip to Gudauri ski resort

  • Visit Zhinvali Dam for photos
  • Explore church and watchtower complex
  • Pass by Pasanauri village
  • Enjoy mountain and valley views
  • Experience skiing and snow activities in Gudauri

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive north through the Caucasus on the Georgian Military Road. You'll pass the Zhinvali Dam on the Aragvi River—a photo stop most visitors take—then Ananuri fortress, a walled complex with a church and watchtower that sits free to explore, with vendors outside selling hot drinks and souvenirs. Pasanauri village comes next, flanked by the river and ringed by mountains, before the road climbs to Gudauri itself. The whole route takes you through the landscape without requiring your own transport or navigation.

At Gudauri, the resort is built for skiers at every level. Beginner runs let you learn from scratch; intermediate and advanced slopes let you push technique; and off-piste terrain opens up for anyone with the skill to ski it. If skiing isn't your plan, snowmobile driving is available, or you can sit at the summit with mulled wine and let the altitude and the view do the work. The driver stays with you throughout and speaks English, so logistics and questions don't slow the day down.

The full day runs 8 to 9 hours from pickup to drop-off. Ski passes, equipment rental and snowmobile bookings are arranged separately at the resort—bring your own skis if you have them, or budget for rentals on site. The drive itself is the quieter half of the day; the resort time is yours to spend however the snow and your appetite suggest.
