The experience
The day starts at your hotel with a pickup that takes you to a bustling local market where you'll select fresh ingredients alongside your host family. By 11:30, you're in their kitchen learning to prepare the country's three most celebrated dishes: Benechin, a one-pot rice and meat staple; Domoda, a rich peanut butter stew; and Yassa, a tangy lemon and onion preparation made with fresh chicken or fish. You cook alongside the family, not watching from the side, and by early afternoon you sit down to eat what your hands just made: breakfast, lunch, and dinner all provided, along with local juices and traditional snacks throughout.
The afternoon brings the physical transformation. Women receive intricate henna designs on their hands, traditional braids woven into their hair, and a full bridal dress in vibrant local fabrics. Men dress in authentic groom attire. Respected elder women guide this preparation, ensuring every detail honors Mandinka tradition. At 5:30 p.m., the ceremony itself unfolds: three hours of celebration featuring a live youth band, dancing, and the rituals that mark a real wedding in this community. You're not observing from a distance. You're at the center of it, moving through the same moments a local bride or groom would experience on their wedding day.
