Step-by-step itinerary
Circle island tour with waterfalls and views

- Walk and rest at Mara’a Grotto
- Explore Vaipahi Water Gardens
- See Faarumai Waterfalls
- Stop at Point Venus headland
The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and moves straight into the circle: Marae Taata, one of Tahiti's largest traditional temple complexes, sits on the coast with three connected marae and distinct stonework that shows how Polynesian ceremonial life was built. Your guide explains what you're standing in front of (the architecture, the rituals, the place in the island's history) rather than leaving you to guess. From there the route moves through lush mountains toward the lagoon, stopping at Mara'a Grotto, a fern-draped cave with a crystal-clear spring pool where you can walk a few steps into the shade and cool off, then Vaipahi Water Gardens, where spring-fed paths wind past small cascades and lily ponds.
Faarumai Waterfalls is the centerpiece: a 300-foot cascade dropping into an emerald valley with a short, easy path through ferns and basalt cliffs to the mist and spray. The guide points out the geology (how the water carved the valley, what the rock formations tell you), and finds the angles for photos. Point Venus, a black-sand headland at Matavai Bay with a lighthouse and wide ocean views, closes the loop. Your guide walks you through the history: the breadfruit mission, the Bounty story, the moments that shaped Tahiti. The minivan is air-conditioned and carries water and seasonal fruit when available.
The guide speaks English and has spent two decades on these routes. Groups max out at seven other travelers, so there's room to ask questions and time to linger at the stops that catch your eye. The whole circle takes 4.5 hours, which leaves the afternoon free.
