Three snorkeling stops in Moorea's lagoon, one morning

You get picked up from your hotel and spend a half-day snorkeling three separate spots in Moorea's lagoon: a shallow sandbank with stingrays and sharks, a drift snorkel through a coral canyon with turtles, and a coral garden full of fish. The tour includes all equipment, a local guide, and a fruit break. Around four hours total, with hotel return included.

4h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Pick up from hotel
  • Sail around Opunohu Bay
  • Watch spinner dolphins (optional)
  • Snorkel with stingrays and blacktip sharks
  • Drift snorkel at coral canyon
  • Observe green turtles and eagle rays
  • Snorkel at coral garden near motus
  • Enjoy break with drink and fresh fruit

The Experience

What if you could stand waist-deep in clear water and have stingrays glide past your legs? That's the first stop on this Moorea snorkeling tour — a shallow sandbank in Opunohu Bay where the water barely reaches your chest and blacktip sharks move through like they own the place, which they do. The boat picks you up from your hotel and heads out early, and the guide briefs you on what to expect before you even get wet. Spinner dolphins sometimes show up in the bay, though the guide will tell you straight: it's not guaranteed, but they're around often enough that people do see them.

The second stop is different — a drift snorkel at the coral canyon where the water deepens and the current does the work for you. You float along watching green turtles and white spotted eagle rays move through the canyon, and the reef walls drop away underneath. This is the part where the guide will ask if you're comfortable in deeper water, and they mean it; if you're not a strong swimmer or you'd rather watch, you can stay on the boat and still see plenty from the surface. The third stop is the coral garden between two motus, where the fish are so thick and colorful you stop thinking about technique and just look. After that, there's a break with fresh tropical fruit and a drink while you're still floating in the lagoon.

The whole thing runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off, and it includes the guide, snorkeling gear, and the transfers. You don't have to arrange a boat, figure out which reef to visit, or bring your own mask — it's all there. The water in Moorea stays warm year-round, and the visibility is usually good enough that you can see the bottom even in the deeper sections.

What’s included

Your half-day includes hotel pickup and return, a local guide, snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel), bottled water, and fresh tropical fruit during the mid-tour break. You'll visit three snorkeling sites: a shallow sandbank with stingrays and blacktip sharks, a drift snorkel through the coral canyon, and a coral garden between two motus.

Top questions

The first and third stops are in shallow water where you can stand. The second stop (coral canyon drift snorkel) is deeper; if you're not confident, you can stay on the boat and watch.
Are spinner dolphins guaranteed?
No. They're often in Opunohu Bay, but sightings aren't guaranteed. The guide will look for them, but the tour focuses on the three snorkeling stops regardless.
What's included in the price?
Hotel pickup and return, snorkeling equipment, a local guide, bottled water, and fresh tropical fruit during the break.
How long is the tour?
Around four hours total, including hotel pickup and drop-off.
What if the weather is bad?
The drift snorkel at the coral canyon may be suspended if conditions are rough. The other stops can usually go ahead.
Can I bring my own snorkeling gear?
Equipment is provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer.
Is there a maximum group size?
The tour uses shared transfers, so groups vary. Ask the operator for the typical group size on your departure date.
