The Experience

First thing I noticed was the smell — that mix of salty air and sunscreen, with a hint of pineapple from somewhere behind me. We climbed onto Taboo, this red-and-white catamaran bobbing just off Moorea’s north coast, and our guide Manu grinned like he’d known us for years. There were only a few of us, which felt right; I always get nervous in big groups. As we pushed away from the mooring, Opunohu Bay opened up to one side, green mountains crowding the sky. The water looked almost fake — glassy blue with flickers of silver where the sun hit it.

We drifted past these little motus (tiny islets — Manu said “motu” about ten times before I finally got it), and then stopped for our first snorkeling spot. I hesitated at first because I’m not exactly Jacques Cousteau, but Manu just handed me a mask and said “You’ll regret it if you don’t.” He was right. The water was cool but not cold, and suddenly there were black tip reef sharks gliding below — not scary at all, more like curious dogs. Stingrays too, soft as silk when they brushed past my legs. Someone pointed out a sea turtle but I missed it; still kicking myself for that.

Back on deck, we sprawled on these netted mats while Manu sliced up mangoes and papaya for us — honestly the sweetest fruit I’ve ever tasted, maybe because my hands were still salty from swimming. He poured cocktails (Mai Tais for anyone who wanted) and joked about how he never gets tired of this view. At one point dolphins showed up near the bow but disappeared before I could grab my phone. It’s funny how quickly you stop caring about photos when you’re actually there.

I kept thinking how quiet it was out there compared to the main beaches — just wind in the sails and someone humming softly near the helm. We headed back as the light started to shift over Moorea’s mountains, everyone a bit sun-dazed and sticky from fruit juice.
