Two fortress ruins built on impossible peaks, linked by Cathar history and a medieval village between them.

A private day tour from Carcassonne visits Quéribus and Peyrepertuse castles, two ruined Cathar strongholds set high on defensive crags in the Corbières mountains. The guide covers the history of the Cathars during the crusade and the strategic role these fortresses played, with a lunch break in the village of Cucugnan and time to walk its medieval streets. The tour runs 9 to 10 hours and requires good physical fitness and proper hiking shoes. Walking sticks are available if needed.

The experience

Quéribus Castle, known as the citadelle du vertige for its dizzying height, stands on the highest peak for miles around and was the last major Cathar stronghold after Montségur fell in 1244. The castle is visible from a distance, sticking up into the sky, and the views from the top stretch across the landscape. Your guide explains how surviving Cathars gathered in the Corbières after the fall of Montségur, using these mountain fortresses as refuges during the crusade.

After Quéribus, you stop in Cucugnan, a pretty medieval village where you eat lunch and have time to wander the old streets and visit the windmill at the top, surrounded by vineyards. The mill's history ties to local bread production and the now-abandoned Bearded Roussillon wheat variety that farmers once grew here.

Peyrepertuse Castle, the second fortress, is one of the most impressive Cathar ruins. Its name comes from the Occitan word for "pierced rock," and the castle itself seems to merge with the stone crag it sits on, from the approach road, it is hard to tell where the rock stops and the castle begins. The lower section was built by the Kings of Aragon in the 11th century. The upper part was added by the French King Louis IX after the region was annexed to France. A staircase once linked the two sections. The castle lost its strategic importance when the France-Spain border moved in 1659, and it was abandoned.
