The experience
Three hours of the eight-hour tour is spent driving to and from Mont-Saint-Michel, leaving you with substantial time on the island itself. Your guide walks you through the medieval village and abbey, whose foundations were laid in 708 by Bishop Aubert after a vision of the Archangel St Michael. The Benedictines settled in the 10th century and turned the site into a major pilgrimage destination. Over 1,300 years, the abbey grew through Romanesque and Gothic periods, and from the 14th century onward, successive wars between France and England prompted the construction of powerful fortifications defended by knights sent by the King of France.
The island sits surrounded by vast sandbanks and becomes an island only at high tide, a feature the guide will explain as you take in views across the largest bay in Europe. UNESCO designated Mont-Saint-Michel a World Heritage Site in 1979. Your guide covers the architecture and the legends attached to the site, and you'll have the chance to eat one of three local specialties: a soufflé omelet, lamb, or mussels. The free shuttle gets you from the parking area to the island entrance, and a bottle of water is provided during the tour.
