The experience

The first thing I noticed was the neon flicker bouncing off wet pavement outside the bar near Bois de Boulogne: felt like a movie scene, honestly. Our guide, Camille, waved us over with this big grin and handed out wristbands (mine was crooked all night). Inside, the air smelled like citrusy gin and someone’s cologne: loud voices everywhere but not in a bad way. We’d barely ordered our first drink before Camille slid over a tray of shots and said “Santé!” I tried to keep up but I’m not sure what was in that first one. Something sharp and sweet. Everyone loosened up fast.

We hopped from bar to bar. Each spot had its own mood. One place had sticky wooden tables and old rock music. Another glowed blue under LED lights, where a group of students from Lyon taught us a drinking game I still don’t fully understand. The walk between bars was short enough that you never lost the buzz or the thread of conversation. At some point it started drizzling but nobody seemed to care. Someone pulled out an umbrella shaped like the Eiffel Tower and we all laughed too hard at that.

The last club felt like stepping into another world: thumping bass, velvet ropes (which we skipped, thanks to Camille), everyone pressed close together on the dance floor. I remember the taste of lime from my last shot and how my shoes stuck a little to the floor. There was this moment where strangers were singing along to a French pop song. I didn’t know any of the words but it didn’t matter. That feeling stuck with me after I left: belonging somewhere unfamiliar, just for one night.
