The Experience

I’ll be honest — we almost missed our guide because I got distracted by a street musician near the Louvre pyramid. The guy played “La Vie en Rose” on an accordion, and for a second, I forgot we were supposed to meet under Louis XIV’s statue. Our guide, Camille, waved us over with a grin, totally unfazed. We zigzagged through centuries: Ancient Egypt’s Sphinx of Tanis (so much bigger than I expected), then Renaissance paintings where Camille pointed out details I’d never have noticed alone — like how Delacroix painted tiny flecks of gold into “Liberty Leading the People.” The Mona Lisa moment was strange; there were fewer people than I’d feared but still enough to make it feel like everyone was holding their breath at once. Her eyes really do follow you — or maybe that’s just what you want to believe after hearing all those stories.

I didn’t expect to feel so much — not awe exactly, but something quieter. Maybe it was being guided by someone who clearly loves this place, or maybe just sharing sideways glances with strangers as we all tried to get a peek at Da Vinci’s famous smile. By the end, my feet hurt but my mind was buzzing with images and little stories Camille had dropped along the way. Still thinking about that view back out onto the glass pyramid as we left, sunlight bouncing off every surface.
