The Experience

You arrive at your hotel and the Jeep is waiting. An original military vehicle—not a replica, not a tour bus—becomes your transport for the morning. The four-hour route moves through four stops, each one a different kind of evidence of what happened on June 6, 1944.

Arromanches comes first: the Mulberry Harbor where British engineers built a temporary deep-water port to unload the supplies that kept the invasion moving. You see what remains of the breakwater and hear how the logistics worked. Then Longues sur Mer, the German battery on the Atlantic Wall—the best-preserved gun emplacement on the coast. The guide explains how British and French naval vessels silenced those guns on D-Day itself. The American Cemetery follows: rows of white crosses on a bluff above the beach, a place built for reflection on the scale of the Allied sacrifice. The last stop is WN 60 on Omaha Beach, the German strongpoint that made the American landing there the costliest of the day.
