The Experience

“You see that church?” our guide Michel said, pointing over his shoulder as we shuffled into Sainte-Mère-Église. The square was so ordinary—kids on bikes, a bakery smell drifting by—but then you look up and there’s the parachute still tangled on the steeple. I hadn’t expected to feel so much just standing there. Michel told us about the paratroopers landing in the dark, some getting stuck right where we stood. He even mimed the way locals waved them down, which made us laugh a little, even though it felt weird to laugh at all.

The Airborne Museum is right next door, and honestly I could’ve spent hours poking around those displays—old boots, faded letters home, that sort of thing. After that we drove out past fields that looked like any other part of France until suddenly you’re at Utah Beach, wind sharp and salty. It’s quieter than I thought it would be. Our group just stood for a minute listening to nothing but gulls and waves. Someone said it felt like time stopped here.

Pointe du Hoc was wild—craters everywhere, grass growing over old bunkers. Michel handed us a photo of what it looked like in 1944 and I got goosebumps realizing how close everything still felt. By the time we reached Omaha Beach and then the Normandy American Cemetery, I’d stopped trying to take photos because nothing really catches it. I still think about all those white crosses lined up under the pines—the only sound was the flags flapping overhead. We headed back to Bayeux tired but kind of changed, if that makes sense.
