The experience
Multi-pitch climbing means ascending routes too long to climb in one push: you and your guide climb to a relay point, anchor the rope, and continue upward. In the Calanques, these routes stretch across 90 to more than 300 meters of cliff, with the sea below and the Mediterranean islands visible from the rock. The guide Fred leads you through the most beautiful long routes in the area (classic lines and sportier challenges depending on your level) on sculpted stone that offers slabs, pillars, cracks and crossings above the water.
The day centers on Sormiou, a cove south of Marseille where the climbing is set directly above the sea. You'll spend roughly four hours on the rock, moving between relays and learning to manage the rope systems, belay techniques and movement on longer pitches. All equipment comes with you: harness, belay device, ropes, quickdraws, climbing shoes, helmet and a safety kit. The guide handles the anchor setup and rope management at each relay, so you focus on the climbing itself and the progression of your technique across the day.
This activity suits climbers with at least moderate fitness and some climbing experience. You don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable on rock and ready to climb continuously for several hours. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French, and children from age 12 are welcome if they meet the fitness requirement. Public transport reaches the area, though having a car makes the approach easier. The weight limit is 110 kg with a standard harness. XL harnesses are available for heavier climbers.

What does multi-pitch climbing mean, and how is it different from single-pitch routes?
Multi-pitch climbing is any route too long to climb without stopping. You and your guide climb to an anchor point called a relay, secure the rope there, and then continue upward. Routes in the Calanques stretch 90 to 300 meters, so you'll make several stops on the way up, managing the rope and belay systems at each one. Single-pitch routes end at the top of one continuous climb. Multi-pitch routes break the ascent into sections.
What is the climbing like in Sormiou, and what kind of rock will I be on?
Sormiou is a cove south of Marseille where the cliffs rise directly above the Mediterranean. The rock is sculpted limestone with varied climbing: slabs to move across, pillars to climb, cracks to work through, and crossings that take you out above the sea. The routes range from classic lines to more challenging pitches, and the guide chooses the climbs that fit your level and the day's conditions.
How long does the climbing take, and what happens during the four hours?
The activity lasts about four hours total. Most of that time is spent on the rock, moving between relay points and climbing the pitches. The guide sets up anchors and manages the rope systems at each stop, so you can focus on climbing and building your technique across multiple pitches without the planning work.
What fitness level do I need, and are there any reasons I shouldn't do this?
You need at least moderate physical fitness and should be comfortable climbing continuously for several hours. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or a fear of heights. You should also be free from dizziness and in good condition overall. Children from age 12 are welcome if they meet the fitness requirement.
What gear is provided, and do I need to bring climbing shoes or a harness?
All climbing equipment is included: harness, belay device, ropes, quickdraws, climbing shoes, helmet and a safety kit. You don't need to bring or rent gear separately. The guide provides everything needed for safe multi-pitch climbing on the day.
