The experience
The tour starts at the port and climbs to Notre-Dame de la Garde, where the basilica sits on a hilltop with a 360-degree view of the city and the Mediterranean. From there you ride La Corniche, the coastal road that hugs the water, then descend to the Old Port, Vieux Port, where the daily fish market runs along the quays and the harbor fills with working boats. Palais du Pharo, a Napoleon-era palace overlooking the port, sits on the route, and the guide steers toward Vallon des Auffes, a working fishing village tucked into a cove that most visitors never find.
The electric bikes handle the hills and the flat stretches alike, so the pace stays steady without wearing you out. You get a helmet and a safety vest. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or German and knows the neighborhoods beyond the postcard stops. Port pickup and drop-off are included, so you leave the ship and return to it without arranging transport.
Four hours is long enough to see the major sights and linger at a couple of them, but short enough to get back to the ship with time to spare. If your port call runs longer, the tour leaves room for a meal or a walk on your own afterward.
