The experience

The tour starts at Lyon Cathedral, where Ryan explains the 12th-century Gothic and Romanesque structure and points out France's oldest medieval clock, still tracking time and Catholic holidays. From there you move into Old Lyon, one of Europe's largest Renaissance districts (second only to Venice), where the silk trade shaped the narrow streets and ornate facades. The guide walks you through the district's history before moving to the traboules. Those medieval passageways that connect buildings underground. There are 200 of them in Lyon, originally built so merchants and traders could move safely between shops without crowding the streets above. Later, the French Resistance used them to meet and exchange messages during WWII, a detail Ryan covers along with the darker history of Klaus Barbie and his arrest of resistance hero Jean Moulin.

The route also takes in Saint Nizier church (a Gothic and neo-classical mix that marks the start of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostello), the fountain in Place des Terreaux (originally destined for Bordeaux before ending up in Lyon), and City Hall: a Baroque masterpiece built as a gift from Louis XIV. Along the way, Ryan points out the chic 2nd district and Rue Mercière's bouchon restaurants, sharing the culinary history and recommendations for places locals actually eat. The tour ends at Place Bellecour, Europe's largest pedestrian square, where you'll hear about King Louis XIV's ties to the city and get a final round of restaurant and shopping tips before a group photo.

The pace is steady but manageable: two hours on foot through the city's picturesque streets and squares. Small groups (max 18) mean you stay close enough to hear the guide and ask questions. The tour works for all ages and fitness levels, though the cobblestones and hills of Old Lyon require comfortable walking shoes. Ryan provides context on everything from architecture to resistance history to where to eat, so you leave with both the landmarks and the local knowledge.
