The Experience

The guide was running five minutes late, which meant we ended up standing outside the Chain Tower with a small group of maybe eight people, all of us checking our phones and making that awkward small talk that happens before a tour starts. They controlled access to the harbor, and for centuries that meant money, power, and the ability to say no to whoever was sailing in.

What struck me was how the walking tour didn't just point at things. We stopped outside the Gross Horloge and heard about the original city walls, about trade routes and how La Rochelle built itself into something that mattered. We passed the statue of a French war hero whose name I'd already forgotten by the time we moved on, but the guide explained the context — who he was, why he mattered to this place.
