The experience
You start from Aix-en-Provence with your national driver's license and a convertible of your choice (the legendary VW Beetle, a Fiat 500, or another cabrio model), and follow a 9-seater escort van driven by a guide who speaks English, Italian or French. The guide shares anecdotes and tips about the region as you drive, and the van is there to ensure safety and handle any issues on the road. Up to four people fit in the Beetle. The Fiat and other models take up to eight.
The route takes you toward Cassis, and if conditions allow, you'll drive the Route des Crêtes: a spectacular scenic road with views down into the coves and cliffs of the Calanques. Once in Cassis, you have free time to walk the village, see the port and the dramatic limestone cliffs that frame it. Then you continue to La Ciotat to visit the Calanque de Figuerolles, the cove Picasso painted, before heading back to Aix-en-Provence. The return is scheduled between 4 and 4:30 p.m.
Each person gets a small bottle of water, and the air-conditioned escort van is always there if you need it. This is not a guided bus tour. You're behind the wheel on one of France's most beautiful coastal drives, with professional support and local knowledge alongside you.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, French and Italian.
Can I drive the convertible myself, or do I need a co-driver?
You drive the convertible yourself with a valid national driver's license. One driver per vehicle is recommended for safety, though the escort van travels with you the whole time.
What is the Calanque de Figuerolles, and why did Picasso paint it?
The Calanque de Figuerolles is a small rocky cove near La Ciotat with turquoise water and dramatic cliffs. Picasso was drawn to the landscape during his time on the French Riviera and captured it in his work. You'll see it during the La Ciotat stop.
What happens if the Route des Crêtes is closed?
The Route des Crêtes is included if it's open, but weather or maintenance can close it. If it is, your guide will take you on an alternative scenic route to the same destinations (Cassis and La Ciotat), so you still see the cliffs and coves.
How many people can fit in each convertible model?
The VW Beetle holds up to four people. The Fiat 500 and other cabrio models hold up to eight. You pick your model at checkout, and the group overall stays under 16 participants.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not a confident driver?
The roads are scenic but manageable, and the escort van stays with you throughout. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though you should be comfortable driving on coastal roads with some curves. If you have concerns, contact the operator before booking.
What's included in the price, and what should I bring?
The tour includes the convertible rental, the escort van with guide, a small bottle of water per person, and all fees and taxes. Bring your original national driver's license, sunscreen, and a camera. Snacks and tips are not included.
